So good, Julie, as always. This old Baptist (barely) preacher preached his first ever Pentecost message today. God has used liturgy and the holy days to bring such blessing to my walk.
Thanks, Brad! Some of the best people I know are my Baptist friends, including you. Will you be sharing your Pentecost sermon? I’d love to read or listen!
I love this Julie. I have loved learning about the liturgical year through writers on substack and especially about Pentecost Sunday. It’s such an important celebration to recognize in the church. Our church does not observe the liturgical calendar but I’m so thankful that you and other writers are leading and teaching us on this. I have so many more thoughts but I’m pondering them all. Thanks for sharing your journey.
Thank you, Janet! I’ve loved learning about it, too, and have found it to be a wonderful anecdote to the anger and anxiety I feel every time I read the headlines!
“It’s a celebration of the miraculous—fire, wind, revelation, and long-awaited promises fulfilled—that leads us right into Ordinary Time.” That’s a great way to put it. I grew up Roman Catholic so I remember the red vestments followed by green all the way til Christ the King Sunday and Advent.
Thanks, Charles. Our church is ecumenical so I have several Catholic friends there, and we also have a Jesuit priest who preaches from time to time. It’s such a gift to experience different traditions. Just out of curiosity, what denomination (if any) do you belong to now? Also, I need to pick your brain at SBL about book recommendations!
My wife has been baptist all her life, so that's where we are. Current church is affiliated with the American Baptists. Yes hopefully I'll bump into you at SBL. I love that bookroom...

If you’re interested, check out my professor Knut Heim’s joint presentation with George Athas on Ecclesiastes. They have a fascinating interpretation.
So you finished your MA at Denver and are doing PhD now?
I graduate in December. Looking into PhD programs now. Hoping to meet a couple of profs I'm interested in working with at SBL.
